MOTY 2017 Entry The Beholder
As a long-time gamer, I’ve always had a fascination with the AD&D monster the Beholder. Over the years I’ve made many variations of the monster, some close to the classic design and others based on a theme. I present here Spike the Beholder, a metallic porcupine themed monster. A scratch built model similar the classic style. The body is a 2″ styrofoam ball covered in Model Magic, a sculptable air dry foam. The main eye is a plastic cabochon while the 10 small eyes are wood beads with old silicon moisture absorbing gel beads for lenses. The body was painted gunmetal with steel then silver dry brushings. Over the years the metals in the paint have aged it even more, creating rusty edges. Each “spike” is a thin aluminum wire painted black and white, around 300 of them hand shaped and attached. The teeth are toothpicks trimmed and aged. A clear rod simulates the floating travel mode of the creature while the base depicts various treasures it guards.
